Changing Your Belief System To Overcome Feelings Of Revenge (Part 2)

The urge for revenge and the false taste of victory or happiness related to it can only end when the belief, that others are responsible for what you feel, is seen as a false one. Only when you take full responsibility for whatever thoughts and feelings you create will it be possible to end the anger and the hatred that seeks revenge. When someone hurts me, I create a negative image of myself and the other person in my mind’s eye, in different ways. I see myself and the other in a negative light, myself as a victim and the other person as a victimizer. I need to stop doing that and see myself and the other in a positive light, in the same light as before, irrespective of the negativity that the other has radiated to me. When we do that, we will stop pointing the finger at others for whatever hurt we may feel. Only when it is fully seen and accepted that someone can hurt or harm my vehicle, the physical body, but not me, the controller or driver of the vehicle, will rage and the desire for revenge stop existing inside my consciousness.

When I start seeing the person who has committed some negative action which is projected towards me, with an innocent, unbiased, untarnished vision, hatred will be transformed into love and compassion for both, me and the other person. Then it will be possible to be totally free of all judgment, criticism and any desire to seek justice and take pleasure and experience victory when justice is delivered. Only then will it be possible to rediscover true happiness in life, because as long as there is even the slightest trace of an urge to seek revenge for what someone has done to me, and the desire to experience the false happiness which is experienced when such revenge is delivered; both of which, the happiness and the revenge, are forms of subtle violence; true everlasting and deep peace, contentment and happiness can never be experienced.

To be accepting means to give a chance to the other person to change.

Expression:When someone makes a mistake there is usually a feeling of guilt and a lot of negative feelings. At such a time if there is understanding and love, it helps the other person bring about a change. There will be always an environment of positivity provided by the one who understands and accepts. So anyone in this environment can bring about a change with great ease.

Experience: Only when I am able to accept can I bring about a change in the other person. When I accept I am able to see what the other person is lacking and provide him with it. So I am actually giving the other person a chance to change. Also when I accept others and understand them, others too are able to accept me and love me as I am. I find my relationships becoming more and more beautiful.

Changing Your Belief System To Overcome Feelings Of Revenge (Part 1)

It’s worth wondering, what I need to change inside my belief system so that no feelings of revenge exist inside me for anyone irrespective of what someone has done to me. When someone harms me or insults me in any way, what is the belief that exists inside my inherent belief system that causes feelings of revenge to emerge inside me in the first place? It is the belief that whenever someone does something negative to me, he hurts me, he is the victimizer and I am a victim. I need to change that to – no one can never hurt me, but it’s what I do with someone’s negative actions, what shape I give the negative actions inside my mind, that causes me hurt, the choice lies with me.

Two people will do two different things inside their minds with the offensive or negative actions of a particular person – one will create feelings of anger, hatred, sorrow, etc which will give rise to the desire for revenge; the other will create feelings of peace, love and good wishes which will give rise to only forgiveness, with no room for revenge. In other words, two different people will respond in two different ways to the negativity of the so called victimizer, depending on their belief system, their inherent personality or nature, their experience of similar negative actions in the past, either committed by the same person or by other people. All these factors will shape their perception of the other’s actions and the self. One will see the other or perceive the other as the victimizer and himself as a victim and another will not identify the other person with his negative actions, but will instead focus on his inherent positive nature or positive aspects of his current personality and will also remain unaffected himself.

The one who has courage to bring about a change is free from excuses.

Expression:For the one who recognizes the need for bringing about a change, every situation is an excuse for doing something new. If there is no commitment to change in every situation, excuses are given and others are blamed. So there is nothing new that is done and nothing new achieved.

Experience: Life becomes very interesting for me when I am willing to take up the challenges that it brings. I am not afraid of new situations and challenges but am able to make the best out of the situation, I am free from fear and have the courage to bring about a change easily and naturally.

Taking Charge Of Your Responses In Close Relationships

In relationships with your loved ones, when looking at the other, sometimes positive emotions are generated and sometimes negative. On the one hand, joy, love and happiness is generated on being with them; but then attachment, dependency and expectations are generated. In such situations, you are more focused on others and are always looking at the other person's behavior, you stop seeing yourself and being aware of your reactions and taking the responsibility for the responses that you create. You get frustrated when the other person does not meet your expectations. As you depend on them, if they don't act as you would like, if they don't reach home or call you at the time you would like; all this frustrates you. You radiate this energy to the other: they are not doing what they should be doing and so you feel frustrated and discontented.

All the while that you hold the other one responsible for your frustration, you are not in charge of your own reactions, because you have given power to the other to dominate your emotional world. It is there that you lose your freedom. You lose your freedom because you give to the other, in the name of love, power over your own moods. You allow the other's energy to enter your inner world and cause inside you frustration, bad moods, irritation, sorrow and a mental and emotional dependence where you are constantly thinking about where they are, what they have to do, what they have to say, where they have to go, and all this consumes a lot of your mental energy. Wanting to control the other and the frustration that it brings with it uses up a lot of emotional energy.

To have respect for the self constantly is to experience progress.

Expression:The one who has respect for the self is not dependent on external inputs for having a good state of mind. To have respect for the self means to have the right state of mind and the right way of working with the self specially when things are not going well. It means to constantly express the positivity that is within.

Experience: When I am able to give respect for the self under all circumstances I am able to experience constant progress. Especially when I am not able to achieve the desired results or when I am not able to be successful, at that time I need to be good to myself. Then I will be able to be the best and do the best with what I have. So I will be able to experience constant progress.

Coping With Stress With Positivity (Part 4)

Continuing from yesterday’s message, the third and final step would be to discover new solutions. In order to do this, we must be prepared to perceive unexpected opportunities. It becomes challenging to do it, as most of us, owing to our social conditioning, become rigidly fixed on our ideas about what defines a happy and successful life. By staying self-assured and making conscious choices and remaining open and involved in the environment, solutions are most likely to emerge. These solutions may open doors to different possibilities, an alternate reality which may not be the same as per our preconceived notions, but they may still be beautiful, if evaluated on the basis of their direct impact on how they make us feel.

In every person’s life, the chances of only good things happenings is very rare. The likelihood that our desires will always be fulfilled is very minute. Sooner or later, everyone will have to confront situations they weren’t prepared for: disappointments, severe illness, financial reversal, and eventually the inevitability of the soul leaving the body in this birth. It is for this reason that courage, resilience, perseverance and maturity are virtues that are so essential to have, in order to lead a healthy and stress free life. Without them, we would always be suffering from the sudden occurrences of undesirable events in life. On the other hand, if we build the inner qualities and strategies to deal with negative situations with a positive energy, these negative events can at least be neutralized, and possibly be even used as challenges that will help make the self-stronger and more stable in all circumstances.

To contribute specialities is to have the power to cooperate.

Expression:Each individual is unique with his own unique set of capabilities. The one who is aware of his specialities and contributes them to any task is the one who is able to cooperate under all circumstances and with all people. There are no conditions attached to contribute these resources.

Experience: When I contribute to every task with my own specialities I have double satisfaction. I have the satisfaction of having contributed something and I am also free from expectations from others. I also find that because I am able to give unconditionally, others too are able to cooperate with me.

Coping With Stress With Positivity (Part 3)

Dealing with stressful situations with a mature outlook is very important. In response to a stressful situation, we can either withdraw ourselves, sleep late, deny what has happened or discharge our frustration by turning against our families and friends. This is a negative way of coping with a difficult situation. An alternative way of responding to the same situation would be that we keep our cool by holding our fears and sorrows for the time being, analyse the problem logically and reassess our priorities. Afterwards, we may choose to redefine the problem, so that we can solve it more easily. This is a positive way of coping with the same situation. For example, in a difficult situation like a divorce, if one chooses to not be impulsive and bitter towards the ex-spouse and stays civil and patient, knowing that it will have an end to it and that life will go back to normal, will help one in making more rational decisions. These are decisions that are not clouded by emotions and it will also help the person to walk out of the unsuccessful marriage with dignity.

How can we emerge successfully from a struggle and transform a hopeless situation into life activity that can be controlled? We can look at three main steps to enable such positive changes. The most important step is to have a deep and strong belief that our own destiny is in our hands. We should not doubt that our capabilities are not sufficient enough to permit us to determine our destiny. In that sense, we should be self-assured; but at the same time egoless. Our energy should not be bent on dominating the environment, but driven towards finding a way to function within it with harmony. This sense of humility - the recognition that in order to succeed, one may have to play with a different set of rules from what one would prefer, is a sign of a strong human being. The second step is to focus attention on the world and stay alert, in order to stop the inner energy from draining into concerns and desires of the ego. The focus should still remain on the goal, but with attention and alertness, we remain open enough to notice and adapt to external events, while moving towards the goal. This will also, in the process, enable unity with our joyous surroundings and penetrate life with fresh and healthy perceptions.

To be committed towards one’s own progress is to help others to move forward.

Expression:The one who is committed towards his own self-progress, is free from criticizing others when he sees them make mistakes. Having realised what is wrong, such a person makes corrections immediately. He is able to realise his own mistake in a second and take the chance for self-improvement. This naturallly gives the ability to help others also to bring about a change for the better.

Experience: Since I am committed to my own self-progress, I am able to become stronger and stronger with each passing situation. I find that I become a source of inspiration for those around, as I continue to learn from all that happens. I don't put people down for their mistakes, but am able to give them the help to be better.

Coping With Stress With Positivity (Part 2)

If we consider our professional lives, work should be an expression of joy. In the twenty four hours that we have in a day, most of us are more preoccupied than busy. Our own thoughts and emotions become such a big issue that most of our time is spent in dealing with them. The results than can be achieved simply are then delivered with a lot of difficulty. When we use our emotional intelligence incorrectly, it turns against us. In such moments, we can help ourselves by remembering that at least our own mind and body should work for us, not against us. Stress causes suffering, which limits life to half a step and never a full stride. Today, the most successful people at a materialistic level, carry the most stressful faces. Unless we translate success into life and a great way to live, the society at large will stagnate. For those of us who are reasonably successful in life, carrying a joyful behaviour, therefore becomes a responsibility.

In order to identify what contributes towards building a person’s ability to cope with stress, there are different aspects we can look at. The first is the external support available, and especially the network of people around and close to the person. The stress of a major illness, for example, can come down to a certain extent, if one has a good insurance and a loving family. The second important source of strength is our own psychological resources like education, intelligence and personality factors. Moving to a new city and establishing new friendships will be more stressful to an introvert person than an extrovert, for example. And thirdly, it has to do with the inner mental and emotional strategies that we build which work best for us in coping with stressful situations. This is the most important aspect, as it determines the effects stress will have on our life and also, it is the most flexible aspect; something which can be completely under our personal control.

The one who is the master is the one who creates positive thoughts under all circumstances.

Expression:The one who is the master of himself is always able to create the right kind of thoughts according to the circumstance. Never is there the dependency on situations or people for the right kind of responses. Since there is mastery over thoughts, there is also mastery over all words spoken and everything done.

Experience: When I am able to be a master of myself, I am able to constantly create positive thoughts. I am in touch with the inner resources and I am able to make use of these resources in a timely way. I never get confused or pressurized with outside situations, but am able to be in control in all situations.

Coping With Stress With Positivity (Part 1)

It is obvious that certain events in life cause more psychological strain than others. For example, the death of a loved one is several times more stressful in magnitude than paying back a loan taken for a house. Any major setback in our personal or professional lives, that frustrates our goals in life, will either force a person to use all his or her emotional energy to create an invisible wall around remaining goals. Or it will protect the person from committing similar mistakes when further negative events in life take place. Or it can also show the person a new, more clear and a more urgent goal, which would be to overcome the challenges created by the negative event of life. Therefore, if we take the correct approach, the negative situation may not necessarily be an obstacle to our quality of life. In fact, what may seem like a devastating event, may come to enrich our life in new and unexpected ways. This difference in how we respond to stressful events can be called our coping ability.

A new situation puts us in a new space, which is an opportunity of personal growth, and need not always be accompanied by a lot of stress. If we were in a situation where the body asked us to choose between health and sickness, we would definitely choose health. If the mind asked us to choose between joy and tension, we would choose joy. Being stressful is a natural outcome of unconscious living - managing our mind and body in a wrong manner. It is like using our mind as a gadget without having read the user’s manual.

To be free from desires is to have the experience of attainment.

Expression:The more there are desires, the more it becomes difficult to appreciate what is there and what is attained. Life becomes a constant struggle for attaining something else. One desire is fulfilled and before it can be appreciated all energies are focused on the fulfillment of ten other desires.

Experience: When I continue to run after desires, I am not able to have the experience of having attained anything. Running for desires is like running after the shadow, I can never get it. But when I turn my back on it, it runs after me. If I am free from desires, I am rich because I am content with whatever little I have and I am happy putting in effort to be better with that little.
